The ideal candidate has a strong background in defense and national security, with a solid grasp of how the U.S. military is leveraging technology to transform its mission. We need a relationship-oriented journalist who is passionate about breaking news and telling compelling stories about the culture, people, and technologies that will shape the future of defense. Experience covering the Air and Space Forces is a bonus, but not required.

Technology is no longer just an enabler of mission for military services and defense agencies — it is mission essential. In this role, you will have the exciting opportunity to be a leading authority on cutting-edge U.S. military programs leveraging technology to outpace threats in the air and space domains — from large-scale modern platforms and their next-generation autonomous sidekicks to emerging concepts and capabilities like artificial intelligence and the ambitious Golden Dome.

In joining DefenseScoop, you will have an exciting opportunity to help shape and scale the publication, which has experienced booming growth since its founding in 2022 and has established itself as a leading defense publication focused purely on technology matters.

What You'll Do

As a DefenseScoop Reporter you'll:

  • Break news: Produce exclusive, in-depth stories on top defense technology matters, from the Pentagon and installations here at home to foreign zones of conflict.
  • Develop sources: Cultivate a deep and diverse network of sources across the defense community and its supporting industrial base.
  • Tell a bigger story: Collaborate with your team on larger, enterprise-level stories and potential long-term editorial projects.
  • Build the brand: Help grow the DefenseScoop brand by participating in events, moderating panels, and establishing yourself as a subject matter expert.
  • Build community: Build community around the DefenseScoop brand by participating in events, moderating panels, developing an expertise in your subject matter and more;
  • Create dynamic content: Work with the Scoop News Group team to create compelling multimedia content for DefenseScoop.
What We're Looking For

We are looking for a journalist with:

  • 5+ years of professional journalism experience or 3+ years of experience working at a defense-focused publication.
  • A strong familiarity with technology and a proven track record of covering defense agencies, companies, and other institutions within the defense community.
  • A bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • A proactive, "can-do" attitude and excellent problem-solving ability.
  • A collaborative spirit with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • A strong understanding of SEO, AP Style, and social media.
  • Experience with multimedia tools and content management systems (CMS).
Position Salary Range: $70K - $95K
